June 5, 2012

my great grandpa Elberts (Bert) financial diary for June 1912.....this is the month/year that my grandpa Allen Ott Miller was born...so references to a doctor and I am guessing a midwife are in this month.

we leave this saturday to go to where Elbert and Alice and my grandpa were born....Mt Bethel Pennsylvania...we are very excited.....Cindy Smith (a family friend) has organized a quick trip around on saturday and a luncheon after church and a small service at the cemetary for my uncle Dave on sunday...will take my computer and Blog from there to keep everyone updated.

what they sold or earned for income:
58 lbs of butter = $15.12
114 dozen eggs = $22.40
5 bushel of potatoes = $6.00
40 bushel of berries = $106.06
so $149.58 came in

what they purchased or paid:
groceries (not specific) = $4.95
 feed  = $17.67
baker = $.50
labor = $11.65
slate =  $1.35
teaman =  $.50
expenses (not specific) = $1.55
1000 berry boxes = $3.75
preacher salary (mr.) = $2.00
drug store = $1.30
Dr Reichard = $10.00
Clara Hilliard = $15.00
oil = $1.25
twine = $ .85
life insurance = $51.14
so $123.46 went out

ok....so a couple of cool things on this months entries.....a bushel of berries is approx 37 quarts and they picked 40 bushels...they picked approx 1,480 quarts of berries in a month...paying labor out of $11.65 and getting $106.06 for the berries...that is a nice profit.

when we get to Mt Bethel...we will ask about Dr Reichard and find out if Clara Hilliard was a midwife

Pleasant Dreams!!!
